After hanging for 6 hours one Friday, struggling for every painful breath, Jesus had every reason to strike out against those who put him there. But he did not. The pain was almost unbearable. Not to mention the 39 stripes, the nails in his hands and feet, and his back which was pulled out of joint… there was also the thirst and the suffocation that accompanies crucifixion. But worst of all was the awareness of every sinful thought, word and act committed by every human being. And yet, the first words from the mouth of the Lord are “Father forgive them!” Jesus was extraordinary!
